Prenatal Massage: Comfort and Support During Pregnancy

Updated: Sep 29
Pregnancy brings a lot of change to your body.
As your body adapts, you may notice that your low back feels tighter, your hips are uncomfortable, your shoulders are carrying more tension, or it simply becomes harder to find a comfortable position and fully relax.
Prenatal massage gives you time to slow down while your session is adapted to where you are in your pregnancy and what your body needs that day.

What Is Prenatal Massage?
Prenatal massage is massage therapy adapted for the physical changes and comfort needs that come with pregnancy.
It isn't necessarily an entirely different style of massage. Many familiar massage techniques can still be used, but positioning, pressure and the areas being worked are adjusted for you and your stage of pregnancy.
The goal is simple: to help you feel comfortable, supported and cared for while your body is doing a tremendous amount of work.
Why Do Pregnant Clients Come in for Massage?
Every pregnancy is different, but some of the reasons clients seek prenatal massage include:
Low back and hip tension
Neck and shoulder tightness
Tired or achy muscles
Discomfort from changing posture
General physical tension
Stress and difficulty slowing down
Simply wanting some quiet time to relax
You don't have to arrive knowing exactly what kind of massage you need.
We'll talk about how you're feeling, what's been bothering you and what would make the session most comfortable.
Comfort and Positioning Matter
One of the biggest differences with prenatal massage is positioning.
As your pregnancy progresses, lying in positions that were once comfortable may no longer feel good. Your massage can be adapted using supportive positioning and bolsters so that you can relax without feeling as though you're constantly trying to get comfortable on the table.
And if something doesn't feel right during your session, tell me.
We can change your position, adjust the pressure, add support or modify what we're doing.
Your comfort comes first.
Prenatal Massage Doesn't Have to Be Feather-Light
There's sometimes an assumption that prenatal massage must be extremely light.
That's not necessarily the case.
Pressure is individualized just as it is in my other massage sessions. Some areas may feel wonderful with gentle, relaxing work, while other areas may benefit from more focused pressure.
The important part is that the work is appropriate for you, comfortable and responsive to how your body feels that day.
A Little Time to Just Be
Pregnancy can come with a surprising amount of noise.
Appointments. Plans. Advice. Lists. Questions. Changes in your body. Changes in your routine.
A massage appointment can simply be a place where you don't have to accomplish anything for a while.
You can settle onto the table, get comfortable and let someone take care of you.
Sometimes that's reason enough to book the massage.
What Should I Tell My Massage Therapist?
Before your session, let me know how far along you are and how you've been feeling.
Tell me about areas of discomfort, changes you've noticed and anything your healthcare provider has asked you to be mindful of.
You should also let me know about any pregnancy complications or health concerns before your appointment. Depending on your individual circumstances, I may recommend checking with your healthcare provider before receiving massage.
Good communication helps me adapt the session appropriately for you.
What About the First Trimester?
There isn't a universal rule that massage must wait until after the first trimester.
What's more important is your individual health and pregnancy.
If you're having complications, have been advised to limit certain activities, or simply aren't sure whether massage is appropriate for you, talk with your healthcare provider before scheduling.
And always let me know that you're pregnant, even if you're very early in your pregnancy.
Your Massage Can Change as Your Pregnancy Changes
What feels good at one point in pregnancy may be completely different several weeks later.
That's okay.
One visit may be mostly about your hips and low back. Another may be about your shoulders and upper back. And sometimes what you need most is simply a relaxing massage and an hour where nobody needs anything from you. Your session can change along with you.
